What are the fees?
- $10 for each signature notarized. If the notarization takes place in your office, there is a minimum $55 travel charge for off-site notarizations, plus the notarization charge.
How long does it take?
- About 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the number of people signing and the number of documents.
Do I need an appointment?
- It is advisable, but not necessary.
When is Notary Service Available?
- Generally, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and at other times by special arrangement.
What Identification Do I Need?
- A California Department of Motor Vehicles Driver’s License, I.D. Card or Senior Citizen I.D. Card. The I.D. Card or License must have been issued within the last 5 years and must have your photograph on it, or
- A driver’s license from a state other than California, or a driver’s license from Canada or from Mexico, or
- A United States Passport, or
- A passport issued by a foreign government (it must be stamped by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services), or
- An identification card issued by any branch of the armed forces of the United States.
- Temporary licenses or temporary I.D. cards cannot be accepted.
What if I Don't Have the Required Identification?
- Bring two people with you who personally know you, who do not have an interest in the document and who each have the required identification.
What If I Am A Minor?
- The same identification requirements apply whether you are an adult or a minor.
What Documents Can You NOT Notarize?
- It is illegal for notaries to certify copies of birth certificates or death certificates. If you are in doubt about whether your document can be notarized, please call the Library.
If I Am Signing as an Attorney-in-Fact, Can You Notarize Documents For Me?
- Yes, if you present the original, notarized power of attorney naming you as attorney-in-fact.
What If My Document Requires Certification or An Apostille?
- The first step is to have your document notarized. Second, take the notarized document to the County Clerk for the county in which the notary's commission is filed. The County Clerk will attach a special form to your document. Third, take the document to the California Secretary of State.
